What this tool does

Paste a public IPv4 address and you get back a best-guess location: country, region, city, coordinates on a map, plus ISP, ASN, and timezone. That is what people mean when they search for an IP location finder or geo IP lookup — same job, different wording.

Rankify built this for the everyday cases: a suspicious login in your auth logs, a support ticket that says “I'm in London” but the IP says Frankfurt, or checking where 8.8.8.8 actually sits before you document it. It reads network databases; it does not track phones or people.

What is IP geolocation?

Every public IP belongs to someone — an ISP, a hosting company, a university. Registries record who got which block. Geolocation vendors take those blocks, add routing measurements and years of corrections, and publish a guess: this prefix is probably used around this city.

That guess powers fraud alerts, weather apps, and “show prices in EUR” banners. It is useful. It is also wrong often enough that you should never bet a legal case on city alone. For ownership and abuse contacts, pair this with IP WHOIS on the same site.

What you get from a lookup

Typical fields on this page:

How we figure out location

Nobody pings your laptop. The process is indirect: ARIN, RIPE, APNIC and the other registries say which organization owns a prefix. Vendors watch BGP announcements, run latency probes, read WHOIS country fields, and fold in user reports when a city is obviously wrong.

When you click lookup, we ask upstream geolocation APIs and show you a normalized summary. What you see is whatever those databases believed at that moment — frozen in time until they update again.

IPv4 vs IPv6

Most of the internet still runs on IPv4, and geolocation vendors have had years to map those blocks. Country and city are reasonably well covered for fixed broadband.

IPv6 is catching up. Vendors geolocate longer prefixes too, but sample sizes are smaller and city detail can be vague — sometimes you only get a country or a regional POP. If you need your own v6 address, use What Is My IP; this lookup form is IPv4 for now.

Residential, mobile, VPN, and datacenter IPs

The network type matters more than the lookup button you click:

Residential

Home broadband from Comcast, Sky, etc. Often the closest you'll get to a real metro — unless the ISP uses CGNAT and bundles many homes behind one public IP.

  • Bad for “which neighbor on my street?”

Mobile

Cell traffic may leave through a gateway dozens or hundreds of miles away. The city field reflects the gateway as often as it reflects you.

VPN

You chose an exit in Amsterdam; the database correctly says Amsterdam. That is working as designed, even if you are on another continent.

Datacenter / cloud

AWS, Azure, OVH — the location is the facility. Bots, scrapers, and legitimate APIs all look like this.

Reading ISP and ASN fields

ISP is the friendly name — the one you would recognize on a bill or hosting invoice. ASN is the technical ID network engineers use in BGP looking glasses. Together they answer a practical question: does this look like a home user, a phone carrier, or a server farm?

If someone claims to be a retail customer in France but the ASN belongs to a Bulgarian hosting provider, that is worth a second look. It is not proof of fraud by itself — just a reason to dig into logs or call IP WHOIS.

Public vs private IPs

Addresses like 192.168.1.5 or 10.0.0.12 only exist inside your router. Geolocation tools cannot place them on a world map. You need the public IP your router NATs to — run What Is My IP if you are not sure which one that is.

How businesses actually use this

  • Block or step-up auth when a login country does not match recent history.
  • Default language and currency on a storefront.
  • Route CDN traffic to a nearby edge.
  • Give support agents a hint when a user insists they are local but the IP says otherwise.
  • Roll up analytics by country without asking for GPS permission.

CDNs and localization

Netflix and news sites do not magic your location from thin air — they read coarse signals including IP country. Engineers test geolocation before launch so the right edge node serves the right language pack.

Do not use IP alone for GDPR banners or age gates. Ask the user. IP country is a default, not consent.

VPNs and why the map “lies”

Connect to a VPN in Japan and every geo IP lookup says Japan. That is not a bug. Security teams know this — they watch for hosting ASNs and impossible travel, not just country codes.

If you use a VPN for privacy, assume sites still see the VPN location. Run a DNS leak test if you want to double-check nothing else is bleeding.

Why MaxMind, IPinfo, and others disagree

Each company maintains its own probe network. Your IP might land in different cities because they measured different exit paths or one database processed last week's ISP reallocation faster.

When you save geo results for compliance, log the date and tool. “Germany on Tuesday” beats “Germany forever” when someone audits the decision six months later.

Usually trustworthy on fixed broadband. Border regions and VPNs are the exceptions.

  • Legitimate API traffic often comes from AWS.
  • Check ASN and app behavior before a hard ban.

Treating one lookup as evidence

  • Geolocation supports an investigation; it does not close one.
  • Keep logs, MFA data, and WHOIS in the same folder.

Practical tips

  • Trust country + ASN first. City is optional seasoning.
  • If city looks wrong, check VPN, mobile, and hosting before opening a ticket with the database vendor.
  • Store timestamps with geo decisions.
  • Never tell end users “we know your exact address from your IP” — you do not.

A VPN swaps your visible IP for the VPN server's IP. Geolocation will show the VPN's country and city, not your living room. For privacy checks, also run a DNS leak test — sometimes DNS still betrays your real region.

ISP is simply the company operating the connection — Verizon, BT, DigitalOcean, and so on. The label on this page comes from geolocation data and might not match the legal name in WHOIS, but it is usually close enough for triage.

VPNs, corporate networks, mobile carrier gateways, and cloud hosting are the usual suspects. Your traffic might exit in Chicago even if you are in Indianapolis. Databases also lag behind when ISPs move IP blocks, so stale data happens.

Big providers refresh constantly — some rows change within hours after a routing shift, others take a week. That is why two tools can disagree on the same IP on the same day.

Reliable street-level geolocation from a public IP is not a thing for consumer tools. Map dots are placed at a city centroid so you have a visual anchor, not a doorstep.

Yes. Carriers often backhaul traffic through a regional hub. Your geolocation might show that hub's city while you are elsewhere — normal for cellular, confusing if you expected GPS precision.
