NEC-style fill percentage limits
Common practice uses about 53% fill for a single conductor, 31% for two conductors, and 40% for three or more in a raceway. Those percentages come from Chapter 9 style guidance and are what this calculator applies unless you are evaluating a short nipple with different rules.
Fill percent equals total conductor cross-sectional area divided by the conduit’s internal area. Larger insulation (for example RHH versus THHN) increases area and may force the next trade size up even at the same AWG.
Picking conduit type
EMT is common for indoor commercial work; PVC Schedule 40 and 80 appear in wet and underground locations; RMC and IMC serve where physical protection is required; flexible types help at equipment connections. Each type has a different internal area for the same trade size, so switching families can change fill results.
SDR designations are included for plastic conduit planning where those dimensions are used. Always match the product data sheet for the exact conduit you purchase.
Wire types and mixed pulls
